About this Collection
A solid is made up of a bulk material covered by a surface. This surface acts as an interface between the material and its surroundings. Over time, these interactions between the surface and its environment can result in degradation or even introduce fundamental changes to makeup of the material.

Modifications to the surface of a material can be used to change the mechanical, chemical and functional properties of a material without needing to re-synthesize said material. This can increase its lifespan, expand its use & introduce beneficial characteristics such as water & heat resistance, corrosion-resistance, or even anti-microbial resistance. Such modifications can also bring about extreme properties.

This collection aims to provide a platform for authors to submit research relating to techniques, technologies, and practices – both theoretical & practical – that are involved with the modification of the surface of materials. Potential topics include but are not limited to:
  • Mechanical techniques
  • Chemical techniques
  • Physical techniques
  • Biochemical techniques
Only research funded by Horizon 2020 and/or Horizon Europe is eligible for publication on Open Research Europe. All article processing charges will be covered centrally by the European Commission.
Open Research Europe requires open access to research data supporting articles under the principle ‘as open as possible, as closed as necessary’. All articles should include citations to repositories that host the data underlying the results, together with any information needed to replicate, validate, and/or reuse the results/your study and analysis of the data.
