About this Collection
As urban populations continue to grow, issues with economic and social progress are often magnified and pressure on existing city infrastructure systems intensify. These challenges not only affect quality of life, but also increase the demand for better informed municipality management.

Smart cities have the potential to address these challenges by promoting the interconnectivity of citizens with their urban environment, the sharing of real time data, and the incorporation of the internet of things (IoT) into urban infrastructure. Smart city projects may include smart parking, traffic management, street lighting, intelligent transport systems, infrastructure monitoring and smart utility metering for electricity and water. What all these projects have in common are sensor-centred collection, the analysis of data and the capacity to respond intelligently to changes in the urban environment.

The purpose of this collection is to highlight progress made by smart city projects across Europe and build towards a more holistic understanding of the various challenges encountered in implementing smart city solutions.

Potential topics include but are not limited to:
  • frameworks and standards for implementation
  • design, models and architecture for ICT and systems
  • smart technology advancement and integration in urban environments
  • implementation challenges, pilots, and proof-of-concepts
  • monitoring, benchmarking, performance metrics and comparisons
  • governance, planning, and policy
