Medical Physics is an aspect of applied physics that focuses on using the concepts and methods of the science to prevent, diagnose and treat human diseases. This field incorporates medical electronics with bioengineering and health physics. The field encompasses several areas, including medical imaging physics, nuclear medicine physics, computational physics and radiation therapy. Developments in this area gave rise to the technology that is responsible for electrocardiogram (ECG) traces, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and X-ray imaging.
Individuals that work in this industry are classified as healthcare professionals that are focused on applying these techniques to treat human diseases and protect medical staff and patients from radiation hazards. They are also involved in researching and developing new treatment plans for diseases such as cancer, heart disease and mental disorders.
This collection aims to highlight the novel activities of physicists looking to develop diagnostic tools and medical physicists who are healthcare professionals that are looking to improve the safety and efficacy of these diagnostic tools. Submissions to this collection can be focused on but not limited to the following topics:
- Applications of laser/ultrasound-based technologies
- Biomedical sensors & implants
- Dosimetry
- Emission Tomography
- Nuclear Medicine
- Radiation safety
- Diagnostic Radiology
- Radiotherapy
- Radiopharmaceuticals
Open Research Europe requires open access to research data supporting articles under the principle ‘as open as possible, as closed as necessary’. All articles should include citations to repositories that host the data underlying the results, together with any information needed to replicate, validate, and/or reuse the results/your study and analysis of the data. We recognize there may be exceptions due to ethical, data protection, or confidentiality considerations, or because the data have been obtained from a third party and access restrictions apply. Only research funded by Horizon 2020 and/or Horizon Europe is eligible for publication on Open Research Europe. All article processing charges will be covered centrally by the European Commission.
