About Global Classical Studies

This collection is dedicated to creating an archive of the reception and reimagining of classical antiquity. It includes studies on a wide range of topics that call into question the notion of a single, authoritative “Classical Tradition”, an idea that has dominated classical scholarship since the nineteenth century. Instead, it foregrounds the diversity of classical inheritances, namely the ways in which different cultures and communities have translated, adapted, contested, and reimagined ancient texts. By examining how Classics has shaped, and has in turn been shaped by, debates on race, gender, empire, and identity, the collection is especially interested in work that challenges the discipline’s established boundaries.

Open Research Europe offers a wide array of article types, including Reviews, Essays, Research Articles, Open Letters, and more, facilitating the publication and dissemination of all research arising from a variety of EU grants. At least one author on the manuscript must meet Open Research Europe's eligibility criteria.

Possible subjects for submissions on ancient literature and its receptions include:

• Translation theory and practice, from ancient translations (for example, the Septuagint and Livius Andronicus) to contemporary rewritings and adaptations
• Multilingualism and linguistic interaction in the ancient Mediterranean (Greek, Latin, Aramaic, Coptic, etc.)
• Textual transmission and the formation of the classical canon
• Intertextuality and allusion in Greek and Latin literature
• Ancient literary criticism and its modern reception
• Cross-cultural comparisons of epic, Attic drama and tragedy, and lyric forms
• Environmental Humanities, ecocritical, and posthuman readings of ancient texts
• Movement, migration, and exile in classical literature (for example, Odysseus, Aeneas, and Ovid)
• Greek and Roman writing on citizenship, democracy, and political thought
• Gender and sexuality in ancient texts and their contemporary interpretations

Possible subjects for submissions on the material and visual culture of the classical world include:

• The role of museums and collecting practices in shaping perceptions of antiquity
• Responses to classical art and architecture from the Renaissance to the present
• Classical mythology in film, theatre, and modern visual arts
• Cultural heritage, repatriation, and decolonial approaches to classical antiquities
• Contemporary memory and reception of ancient sites and monuments
• Gender, ethnicity, and identity in the visual culture of ancient Greece and Rome
• The relationship between text and image, including ekphrasis, vase painting, and illustrated manuscripts
