About this Collection
A composite material is produced combining two or more materials, having different properties and physical boundaries, obtaining superior or new properties with respect to those of its individual constituents. The interface between the constituents plays a fundamental role, and is characterized by physical or chemical bonds, which may be irreversible or reversible.

Composites are flexible in their design and can be engineered to form materials that are suitable for a variety of applications and uses. Compared to conventional materials, composites can thus e.g., be lightweight, have increased strength or chemical resistance, be less expensive to manufacture. More recent advances include bio-inspired composites, shape-memory materials, and new functionalities are implemented exploiting design flexibility.

This collection aims to collate research related to the development and application of polymer, ceramic and metallic matrix composites, theoretical or applied. Potential topics that can be submitted to this collection include but are not limited to:
· Multi-purpose/functional composites
· Bio-inspired composites
· Sustainable/biobased composites
· Advanced reinforcing fibers and particles
· Interfaces in composite materials
· Microstructural characterization
· Modelling of composite systems
· Advances in composite manufacture & processing
· Recycling of composites

Only research funded by the European Commission is eligible for publication on Open Research Europe. All article processing charges will be covered centrally by the European Commission. Open Research Europe requires open access to research data supporting articles under the principle ‘as open as possible, as closed as necessary’. All articles should include citations to repositories that host the data underlying the results, together with any information needed to replicate, validate, and/or reuse the results/your study and analysis of the data. We recognise there may be exceptions due to ethical, data protection, or confidentiality considerations, or because the data have been obtained from a third party and access restrictions apply.
