About this Collection
Photonics is the science of light waves, specifically relating to the generation, detection and manipulation of light. The term “photonics” was initially used in the 1960s after the invention of the laser & the laser diode to describe a field in which light was used to perform functions traditionally accomplished by electronics in relation to the extreme velocity of light. However, today, the term refers to the creation and manipulation of light for the development of ultrafast and cost-effective applications.

The aim of this collection is to bring together recent works related to developments and improvements within the field of photonics in a bid to drive innovation forward. This collection focuses on research articles that are related but not limited to research concerning the emission, transmission, amplification, detection & modulation of light such as:
  • Lasers, light-emitting diodes (LEDs) & other sources of lights
  • Imaging, detectors & sensors
  • Novel materials (e.g., topological photonics) & engineered structures
  • Plasmonics
  • Biophotonics
  • Nanophotonics (lab-on-a-chip)
  • Polaritonics & ultrafast sciences
Open Research Europe requires open access to research data supporting articles under the principle ‘as open as possible, as closed as necessary’. All articles should include citations to repositories that host the data underlying the results, together with any information needed to replicate, validate, and/or reuse the results/your study and analysis of the data. We recognize there may be exceptions due to ethical, data protection, or confidentiality considerations, or because the data have been obtained from a third party and access restrictions apply. Only research funded by Horizon 2020 and/or Horizon Europe is eligible for publication on Open Research Europe. All article processing charges will be covered centrally by the European Commission.
